Being proactive about skin health can be easy to put off, especially when life is busy, and nothing seems obviously wrong. But for Dawn Stringer, a changing spot on her leg became a life-changing wake-up call.
Dawn, Mrs. Texas International 2026, is a melanoma survivor and patient advocate who now uses her experience to encourage others to take sun safety and skin checks seriously. Her story is a powerful reminder that early detection matters and that daily sun protection should be part of how we care for our skin.
Dawn’s Diagnosis
At age 31, just shortly after giving birth to her youngest son, Dawn noticed a freckle on her leg that was changing and becoming inflamed in the sun. With a history of tanning bed use and years spent at the beach, she decided it was finally time for her first skin check. A couple of weeks later, she received the news: she had melanoma.
“At the time, I didn’t know much about it,” Dawn shared. “But I knew melanoma is what killed people, and that scared me.”
That fear quickly turned into purpose. Since her diagnosis, Dawn has made it a mission to speak openly about her experience so others can learn from her story, take skin health seriously, and avoid making the same mistakes.
How Melanoma Changed Her Perspective on Sun Protection and Skin Checks
For Dawn, the diagnosis changed everything, especially the way she thinks about daily sun protection and skin checks.
“A tan used to be the goal for me no matter what,” she said. “Now, sun protection is part of my life every single day.”
Looking back, she sees how early those habits began and how important it is to protect skin at every age.
“I started damaging my skin in my early teens, and I realize now protecting our largest organ is imperative, no matter how young/old we are.”
She now also gets regular skin checks, which she sees as essential rather than optional.
“I get regular skin checks now, because a skin check saved my life.”
Her experience has also shaped the way she talks to the next generation in her family.
“I am creating better habits for my kids, nieces and nephews. If anything, I can use this experience to teach them a tan isn't worth the cost of our health.”
Why Her Message Matters
Dawn’s story is especially meaningful because it highlights two things many people put off or underestimate: routine skin checks and consistent sun protection. Skin damage can build over time, and habits that may once have felt normal or harmless can carry real consequences later on. Now, as a survivor and advocate, Dawn hopes more people will stop thinking of skin checks as optional and start seeing them as an essential part of overall health.

Her Advice for Anyone Putting Off a Skin Check
When asked what she would say to someone delaying a skin exam, Dawn’s answer was simple and powerful:
“It could save your life.”
She continued, “It’s just as important as any normal medical physical. Every human has skin, and every human has sun exposure, so whether you have concerns or not, if cancerous cells are growing on our skin, early detection is key.”
For Dawn, that message is deeply personal.
“Early detection saved my life, and if I didn’t get my skin checked, I could have been leaving behind two small children.”
A Reminder for Skin Cancer Awareness Month
During Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Dawn’s story is a reminder to pay attention, schedule the appointment, and not ignore changes in your skin. A skin check may seem small, but it can have an enormous impact. Her journey also speaks to the importance of daily sun protection and making thoughtful choices about long-term skin health.
Let Dawn’s story be a reminder to schedule your skin check, prioritize daily sun protection, and take simple steps to care for your skin every day.
