Women’s History Month Spotlight: Ann Liguori and the Power of Breaking Barriers

Every March, Women’s History Month gives us an opportunity to reflect on the women who didn’t just succeed — they shifted culture.

This year, we are proud to spotlight Ann Liguori — a pioneering voice in sports broadcasting whose career helped redefine what leadership looks like in media.

A Voice That Entered the Arena

When Ann Liguori began her career, sports radio and television were overwhelmingly male-dominated. Women were often sidelined, rarely heard, and seldom given the authority to lead conversations about sports. Ann changed that.

She became the first woman to host a call-in sports radio show on WFAN, the nation’s first all-sports radio station. It was a groundbreaking moment — not only for her career, but for women in media across the country. This wasn’t a symbolic representation. It was real leadership in real time.

Hosting a live call-in show requires confidence, deep subject-matter expertise, and the ability to command a room - or in this case, the airwaves. Ann brought preparation, professionalism, and undeniable passion to every broadcast, earning respect in an industry that had not historically made space for women.

Breaking Barriers in Golf and Beyond

Over the course of her career, Ann has covered some of the most prestigious events in golf and sports. She has interviewed legends, reported from major championships, and built a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and respected journalists in the game. But her influence extends beyond tournament coverage.

Ann’s presence in the broadcast booth signaled something larger: women belong in every conversation, including the ones historically reserved for men.

In golf, especially, a sport rooted in tradition, visibility matters. Representation matters. When women are seen and heard as authoritative voices in the sport, it shifts expectations and expands opportunity. Ann didn’t simply participate in the industry. She helped modernize it.

Ann was the first female to host her own prime-time show on the Golf Channel. 'Conversations with Ann Liguori,' featuring Ann interviewing an A List of guests (whom she also booked to be on the show), from Celine Dion, Matthew McConaughey, Vince Gill, and Amy Grant, to Kevin Costner, Joe Pesci, Sylvester Stallone, Jim Brown and Samuel L Jackson, aired weekly on the Golf Channel for four years, beginning the first Wednesday the Channel was on the air.

Ann also hosted, executive-produced, and owned a weekly cable show, 'Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori,' in which Ann interviewed the biggest names in sports. From Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Hank Aaron, Billie Jean King, Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, to Gordie Howe, Wilt Chamberlain, Bart Starr, Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Patty Berg, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, and Annika Sorenstam, Ann put the cable show together, booked the guests, acquired the sponsorships, syndicated the show on sports cable networks throughout the country, and the show aired weekly for 17 years.

The Importance of Representation in Sports Media

Women’s History Month is not only about celebrating individual accomplishments. It’s about recognizing the ripple effects those accomplishments create.

Today, more women host sports shows, report from sidelines, and lead media conversations than ever before. Progress is visible, but it was built on the persistence of pioneers.

When young women see someone like Ann Liguori confidently leading a sports broadcast, it reshapes what feels possible. It affirms that expertise transcends gender. It proves that credibility is earned through preparation and performance — not stereotypes. That matters because representation does more than inspire. It normalizes leadership.

Leadership That Lasts

Ann continues to contribute thoughtfully to the sports world, champion athletes, and support the next generation of women in media. Longevity in any industry is earned. Her story reminds us that leadership isn’t always loud. Sometimes it’s steady, consistent and unapologetic in its excellence. Over time, that kind of leadership changes culture.

Celebrating Women Who Lead

At IBKÜL, we are proud to partner with women who lead — on the course, in the studio, and in every arena where passion meets performance. From the broadcast booth to the fairway, women continue to redefine what strength, expertise, and professionalism look like in sport.

This Women’s History Month, we honor Ann Liguori not only for what she achieved but for what she made possible. History isn’t only written in record books, sometimes it’s carried on the airwaves – and sometimes, it opens doors for generations to come.
