Serene Williams

The Early Years
Serena was born in 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan. Her parents, Oracene Price and Richard Williams, recognized a determined spirit and profound athletic ability in two of their daughters — Serena and her older sister, Vanessa. This inspired them to become their dedicated coaches.

Serena began playing tennis at the early age of four.  By the age of 9, the family moved to Florida so the girls could train more intensely.

However, their father made it a priority to allow his daughters to train slowly, to limit the pressure, so they could enjoy their childhood and focus on their education.

Despite the intentional slower approach, by 1995 — due to Serena’s talent and commitment— she had turned professional.  And by 1999, Serena won the Major Singles title at the US Open.

Career Highlights
Serena excelled at the 2002 French Open and the 2003 Australian Open.

Soon afterward, she experienced some professional highs and lows. While enjoying a successful time of additional wins, she suffered a temporary setback in form after sustaining injuries.

Yet, despite those injuries, by 2007 she had skyrocketed to the number 1 ranking in the world.

In 2017, she won her 23rd major title at the Australian Open while secretly being 8 weeks pregnant.

After taking an extended pregnancy break, Serena returned to tennis to take the courts by storm.

In addition to an astounding number of awards and titles, Serena has won 4 Olympic Gold Medals— three of which she shares with her sister, Venus.

Serena’s unique tennis style is highlighted by her powerful serve that averages an astounding 170 kilometers per hour.
